Riesling, Famille Mantler, 2020
The Mantler family have owned and run their farm and vineyard in Weinviertel, Austria, for over 100 years. Originally, the family farmed mixed agriculture, changing specialty each year, but in 1977, Karl Mantler, who was just 18 at the time, decided to move fully into grape growing and wine production.
The vineyard has been certified ‘Sustainable Austria’ since 2018, thanks to their use of compost rather than fertiliser, and their sowing of seeds in between the vines which not only increases biodiversity but has also completely eradicated cutworm, a pest which would normally gorge on newly formed buds each Spring. These incredible wild flowers which grow between every row of vines also inspired one of the bottle’s beautiful labels.
The on site winery comprises an underground cellar, where the oak and acacia barrels are kept, and a 165 year old grape press. The family are also building a state of the art winery building which will house the pneumatic press and fermentation vessels and their custom designed bottling line. The entire building will be covered in solar panels, making their wine operations self sufficient.
This wonderful Riesling has a beautiful nose of peaches, apple blossom and fresh limes, while on the palate is juicy and textured with crisp acidity and a burst of tropical fruit.
12.5% ABV.
